jasonkhong.com: What's Happening at Sipadan? /articles/2006/05/18/whats-happening-at-sipadan en-us 40 Exploring a Flat World What's Happening at Sipadan? <p>Summary: Huge barge carrying <strong>construction materials</strong> &#8220;accidentally&#8221; destroys a patch (about the size of <a href="http://www.divemagazine.co.uk/forum/forummessages.asp?URN=1&amp;UTN=481&amp;SP=332743698750330478624&amp;V=2">3 tennis courts</a> ) of precious coral reef off Sipadan Island &#8211; Malaysia&#8217;s best diving spot.</p> <p>Read more: </p> <ol> <li><a href="http://www.finsonline.com/blog/fins/?p=39">Sipadan &#8211; Tragic Accident</a> First report on the senseless man-made disaster in Sipadan.</li> </ol> <p>I cannot see how it is an <strong>accident</strong> that the barge is somehow carrying construction materials &#8211; &#8220;thousands of tonnes of coarse gravel, sand, steel tubes, iron mesh, prime movers, a large bulldozer and a gigantic crane&#8221; (see link 1) &#8211; just happens to <strong>accidentally</strong> be anchored offloading it&#8217;s cargo at Sipadan Island.</p> <p>Recall that, just less than 2 years ago, the government kicked <em>all</em> dive operators and hotels off the island for &#8220;conservation&#8221;.</p> <p>The destruction of the corals is really disheartening, but that&#8217;s done and nothing in the next thousand years or so can bring the corals back.</p> <p>The saddest part is seeing the government &#8211; MY government &#8211; go back on it&#8217;s word like that.
